Poshmark
An application to resell any product
Project Brief
Poshmark is a resale social marketplace platform for users to buy and sell new as well as used products. Users range from professional sellers that source their primary income through Poshmark to casual sellers that occasionally find items to sell as a hobby or side source of income. Recently, Poshmark has seen a large amount of drop-off from casual sellers and my team worked to design a solution to maintain casual seller engagement on the mobile app.

Research
Currently, Poshmark allows for users to post listings to generate revenue. And after the initial post, users are allowed the below actions to increase visibility of their closet and make sales:

The problem is, not everyone knows about these actions - especially not casual sellers.
We formed a research plan to answer the below questions:
-
What factors are causing casual sellers to stop listing on Poshmark?
-
Why are casual sellers not listing more items in their closet?
-
What pain points and frustrations do casual sellers encounter while engaging with the platform?
-
Which of these pain points are the primary barriers to casual sellers’ continued engagement with the platform?
User Interviews
To have a better understanding of the frustrations of the casual sellers, we interviewed five of these sellers directly. We sent out a screener survey to gather interview participants and targeted casual sellers that fell within the below demographics:

-
Annual sales totaled less than $2,500
-
Started selling on Poshmark within past two years
-
Not exclusive to Poshmark and have tried other platforms
-
Listing items on the side and not as their primary business
Following these interviews, we found the below trends:

Personas
We’ve captured our user research results with two personas:
-
The Self-Motivated Posher
-
The Anxious Posher

Competitive Analysis:
We compared Poshmark’s features with those of competitors Mercari, Vinted, Depop and Facebook Marketplace.

Research Synthesis
Using our synthesized research results, we’ve come up with the below design solutions:

User Flows
To capture the path of our solutions, crafted the following user flows:

Sketching to Lo-Fi to Hi-Fi:
To start forming a vision for the solutions, we utilized Crazy 8’s sketching and came up with the below early stage ideas that we were iterated to form the following low-fidelity wireframes:

Next Steps & Takeaways
As our journey with Poshmark came to a close, we encourage execution of the below next steps:
-
Testing: Making sure to test the prototype with casual sellers will validate the design solutions’ effectiveness.
-
Additional Rewards: While we came up with a couple reward incentives, further brainstorming on more badges with stakeholder approval would add more incentives for casual sellers to remain engaged on Poshmark.
-
Coordination with Development: Collaborating with the development team would help confirm whether the design solutions are executable and specification annotations would need to be created to ensure a seamless handoff.
For this project, I reflected on the below key takeaways:
-
Communicate on any blockers and collaborate with teams to work through these blockers together
-
Make sure to maintain regularly and consistent check ins to have a space for the team to address any issues that may have come up during individual tasks
